About Edwin Hayes
I was born and raised in The Eastern Cape of South Africa. My early years were spent living on a stock farm on the border of the Little Karoo, a semi arid but beautiful region. I am inspired by big skys, rich colours and the way in which changing sunlight animates and moulds a landscape to produce its unique colours and character. I now live in the UK with my family where I work and have my small studio.
A little more about what I believe about creativity.........
The moment we arranged our first block on top of another, became fascinated by the marks of a pencil on a surface or enjoyed the attraction of colour; this was the moment it all started for us.
The creative aspects of educational development are generally relegated to the back of the line in favour of the more academic subjects. In reality our survival in the world depends on highly developed levels of creativity. The solutions to today’s and tomorrow's very challenging problems will come from creative people, from right brain thinkers. The late Steve Jobs said this, "first I see it then I make it".
I also believe that if we loose the opportunity to be creative or creative expression is suppressed in some way, for whatever reason, something degenerative happens within us. The longer creativity is suppressed or opressed the more mundane and colourless life becomes; we begin to find more problems than solutions to our challenges.
I see the answers to so many of life’s issues to be found in our ability to adequately express ourselves through creative platforms, be they art, writing, music, talking or performing. I am equally passionate about seeing people discover or rediscover their fullest potential by understanding that creativity is not limited to “the chosen” but that it is an integral part of the human makeup; It simply has to be ignited, restored and nurtured.
Thornwood Studio is the expression of a personal dream and journey. It is, in its simplest form, a place not only to explore my own creativity but also a space which represents my passion for encouraging others to find an expression of their own creativite natures.
Long live the desire and passion to explore our creative depths and the adventures and discoveries associated with the journey. Bon Voyage
